Yin & Yang
Friday, March 31, 2006
When we describe what things are, we always contrast them with something else. But when we talk about the universe as a whole- about all that there is, we find that there are really no words for it. In Taoism the singular nature of the universe is represented by a great circle. But in order to think about the universe, life and everything in it, we have to make comparisons. So the circle is is split in two and from this is created the symbol of the yin & yang. The yin represents the negative, the female; the yang represents the positive, the male. Dark and light, no and yes. off and on. This polarity of opposites is the foundation of reality. They are mutually arising and eternally united. It is the dance of the universe and everything in it. It is the Tao, and it is you.
